Translation Recordings are at it again with five more devastatingly dark cuts of drum & bass from the more experimental end of the spectrum on Bassment Beats Vol 3.
Label founder RogueState is on target himself with closing track ‘Origins’ which balances the label’s penchant for bassweight with a leftfield edge in the shape of surprisingly lush pads and staccato drums.
The four tracks that come before share the same love of the outer reaches of the genre, and in particular the darker side of that area – Akinsa’s opener is cavernous, echoey and full of withheld power, while ‘Tumbler’ by Fuj takes the torch and runs with it, unleashing some of that pent-up strength in the hardest track on the record.
Mark Kloud’s effort ‘Coplanar’ sits between tough d&b and spacey atmospherics, and Broken Promise takes a snarling bassline to an otherwise spaced-out track.

Finnish duo Out of Fuel’s new EP, Isolation, is a real iceberg of a record – the kind that sinks ships, not bulks out your salad.
All frosty percussion and crystalline sci-fi pads, the EP marks the duo’s return to American label Translation Recordings and it is a bass-heavy, atmospheric affair. Moving in the shadows of drum & bass, skipping hats and window-shaking kicks keep things urgent across the four original tracks on the record, which concludes with the stalking Hypersensitivity remix of 2016 track ‘Ghosts’.
Isolation is out now on Washington, DC-based label Translation Recordings. Head to https://translationrecordings.bandcamp.com/ to buy, or listen below.
London producer Cid Poitier is back with his second release on Translation Recordings, a treacle-thick affair fusing jungle, dub and dancehall vibes.
Held together by great swells of bassweight, the Deep Logic EP travels through the soundsystem culture the producer loves and knows so well.
Techy opener ‘Deep Logic’ is a claustrophobic drum & bass track which nods towards late 90s neurofunk. Elsewhere the sharp edges are rounded off, leading to the dub-infused ‘Kill Sound’ and jungle/dancehall cut ‘Unity’, before the tempo drops to 140bpm for the heavyweight dub skanker ‘Rebel’.
The EP closes with an urgent remix of ‘Hear Dis’ from Cid Poitier’s Afrique EP from the Untouchables.
