The name Randall is synonymous with the foundations of drum & bass and the second installation of his PIECES Sessions helps to solidify why he’s become such a revered icon across the scene. Filled with some of the biggest names, both newcomers and those who’ve pioneered the genre from its very beginning, ‘Randall presents: PIECES Session 2’ draws for the big guns, continuing his legacy within the genre’s underground.

From the fearsome, fresh sounds of critically acclaimed newcomer Benny L, to the pivotal Seba remix of Goldie, Dego and Randall himself, ‘Randall presents: PIECES Session 2’ is a wheel of musicality which epitomises why drum & bass has remained timeless.

After the ground breaking first compilation in 2015, which featured a host of unbridled talent, Randall continues to present himself as the ultimate selector with sixteen tightly-packed records. Whether its Jaybee & Trex’s moody offering ‘Poison Dart’, Benny L’s crunching riddim ‘Dr. No’ or the unbridled ferocity of Jaybee & XTC Notts ‘Charlie’, there’s a range of versatility to fit everyone’s tastes. The melodic liquid vibes prevalent throughout Madcap’s ‘Rain’ and the Voltage Rollers’ remix of ‘Broken Plates’ by Randall, Dave Anthony and LisaMillet also adds to the album’s impressive spectrum of sound. Drum & bass royalty MC Fats also joins Zere, Gabriel Habit and Dave Owen for ‘Rollin’, a contemporary jungle hymn which once again signposts the LP’s stellar list of featuring artists.

FlatT’s ‘The Warmth’ brings metallic instrumentation alongside crackling LFO for yet another weighty delivery, whilst TI’s infamous dancefloor anthem ‘All I Do’ makes a welcome addition. Shimon, Randall and Fatman D join forces with ‘Get Twang’, gathering some of drum & basses most revered names for a techy, tightly-knit contribution. Then comes Paul T and Edward Orberon on remix duties for Trex’s ‘Soul for Sale’ with vocal help from Ella Jones. They exorcize a harder edge which drops to subterranean levels following a climatic drop. Margaman and CoolHand Flex enter the fray with ‘Warn Dem’, a crashing conundrum of quickly peddled drums and cascading breaks. DJ Vapour makes an appearance with pumping sonic record ‘Looking Back’, and both Benny L and Trex return for two more tracks ‘Just Swing’ and ‘Short Story’. Finally, DLR, Hoppa and Gusto make their LP debut with the fierce ‘Who Let You In (What You Doin Round Here)’ and Seba draws the album to a close with his rework of ‘The R’, moving an already impressive musical feat into unfamiliar territories.

‘Randall presents: PIECES Session 2’ is an unmissable release. For both jungle purists and record collectors everywhere, it will stand as a definitive output for an artist who’s woven his path within the scene for decades and will continue to do so for years to come.

Roni Size & Reprazent to reissue ‘New Forms’ – the 1997 Mercury Music Prize Winning Album

This November, New Forms by Roni Size & Reprazent celebrates its 20th anniversary with a deluxe 4CD / 2LP reissue. To commemorate this era-defining drum ‘n’ bass album, the package will feature a New Forms 20th anniversary live hardware mix programmed by Roni featuring previously unreleased remixes and re-edits, remixes from drum ‘n’ bass legends such as Grooverider, Source Direct and Krust (previously only released on vinyl) and the 2017 remaster of the original 2CD / LP.

One of the definitive electronic albums of the 90s, New Forms brought drum ‘n’ bass into the mainstream. Fighting off industry heavyweights including the Spice Girls, The Prodigy, Suede, Radiohead, Primal Scream and The Chemical Brothers, Roni Size & Reprazent won the 1997 Mercury Music Prize, going on to sell 300,000 units in the UK with its release on BBC Radio 1 DJ Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud records.

Reprazent were a Bristol-based collective brought together by Roni that included DJs Die, Suv and Krust as well as Dynamite MC and vocalist Onallee. Akin to their fellow Bristolians Massive Attack, they grew up on a diverse diet of influences including street soul, hip hop, electro, reggae and dub. They weaved elements of each with the new electronic sounds of jungle and break-beats to create drum ‘n’ bass – of which New Forms is one of the defining masterpieces.

20 years since being propelled into the mainstream, drum ‘n’ bass continues to thrive with artists including Chase and Status, Sigma, and Wilkinson dominating the charts, all of whom acknowledge Roni Size & Reprazent as forefathers of the scene. Whilst Grime, a genre with a similarly unique cultural heritage, enjoys its moment – it feels like perfect timing to honour New Forms as the seminal milestone in British music as it is.

This Autumn to further celebrate 20 years of New Forms, Roni Size will take his ground breaking audio-visual live show to Hospitality in the Park, London on Saturday 23rd September before widely touring throughout the world (full schedule TBA). Having debuted earlier this year at the Oval Space and since showcased at Moovin Festival and The Downs, the combined live instrument and hardware show features state of the art production and 3D effect projection mapping in the form of the ‘light box’; and marks the first time Roni has performed the Mercury Prize winning album ‘New Forms’ as a solo performer.

New Forms will be reissued 10th November, 2017.

After his critically acclaimed EP on SGN:LTD last year the rise of Mitekiss continues as he graduates to a full-blown solo release on Shogun. Awash with rolling piano loops and exquisite vocals on what’s fast becoming the trademark sound of Mitekiss, the celestial vibe is high throughout making for a beautifully rounded EP with shelf life in spades.

“I wasn’t even expecting to release a record on Shogun, but after speaking to the guys and sending them about 20 ideas they told me my next EP would be a Shogun release, I was quite happy to say the least! After some discussion we managed to narrow it down to four tunes that felt right for this EP. I wanted to make a more grown up record, something with a bit more restraint which I always find difficult and I feel these do that for me. I’ve used Mr Porter on three of the tracks and I’ve also got Jerome Thomas on ‘Who’s There’, bringing a lovely soulful touch to the final song of the EP. I hope you dig the new tunes, there’s more to come.” Mitekiss
