Sikey & Speedwagon- Misty Eyed Dub EP [Space Pirate Recordings]

In the very earliest days of Space Pirateering, rocketbuilding and asteroid mining in the BE-32 nebula, only a
select few were already firing breakbeat arrays and bass cannons at the humanoids on this mud rock. That
they were carving the first signs of a path many would walk behind them, they did not know.

Both Sikey & Speedwagon have been at the forefront of Belgium’s (the local designation for the BE-32 nebula)
drum & bass scene since the last turn of the centuries. After having served the deities of 170BPM as solo
buccaneers and in different formations, they teamed up to form a production unit that would honour the
vibrations brought forth by the earliest of Pirates. Not having traded their organic limbs for the powers of the
plasma snare or the quadruple frequency modulated, planet-core-melting reecelines, the duo’s output vibes
like only a real mud rock can.

Misty Eyed Dub is their ode to the sacred tree they originally needed to destroy during the “Planet 47 Heist”
mission. However, upon learning that this tree was the original source of life and vibrations on Planet 47, these
space pirates decided to put the sustained existence of the sacred misty eyed tree above their own interests
and left it to flourish so the planet would continue to be a sacred home for all lifeforms on the rock.

Get Vile is the musical counterpart to Misty Eyed Dub. Although consistent in dubby vibes and rolling rock
formations, Get Vile paints a slightly darker picture of the very same mission. Initially composed as a song of
war, after first contact with the strange life on Planet 47, its message became redundant, although the music
itself did not and now serves on many Space Pirate ships as a reminder to above all learn and not assume,
despite whatever their initial mission targets were so to adhere to the Space Pirate credo: “Good Pirates Break
Bad Rules”.

Hybris- Not Bug EP [Pseudoscience Recordings]

“I no make mistake, I make innovate.”

If there’s any way to characterize Hybris’ singularly weird and unique out there, it might be that sentence from the EP press itself. With the NOT BUG EP Hybris indeed doubles down on this principle, delivering four tracks that stand on the cutting edge of drum & bass (and beyond) with expert precision.

NOT BUG opens the EP with a strange landscape of tense pads and murky bass drums that thrum with a sinister energy even through their obscurity. FALSE POSITIVE takes a more orthodox approach by comparison, sticking to a straightforward drumbeat but morphing just about every other sound surrounding it to an extreme degree. BEACH MEAT provides a deep and motive bassline groove to the EP, interspersed with hollow sonar pulses from the depths beyond the shore. Finally, there is MUG. Here, all of the EPs elements combine in a dazzling sonic flurry. Impossibly warped basses, odd tonal textures, powerful punchy drums and a full out commitment to weirdness might make this track overwhelming for some, but for that we will leave it to Hybris to explain. Fourward- Torn Place [Eatbrain]

An observer stood upon a rooftop, gazing out over the metropolis that shimmered beneath him. To all outward appearances, it was an idyllic landscape. Busy & bustling, sure, but in ways that spoke of efficiency and the success of their kind. To them, it was a monument to their collective greatness that they could construct the steel-boned monoliths that reached upward to the heavens, but for the lone rooftop figure, a very different view was laid out below. His gaze cut through the superficial, and saw the city for what it truly was: a TORN PLACE.

Within his eyes those same monoliths represented not success in their glittering facades, but rather the greed, avarice, and corruption of those who dwelled within. He saw the rampant struggle to reach their peaks, the drive to triumph over one another, that also drove its champions to madness as they buckled under the weight of what they had done. As his gaze fell downwards the observer saw the destitute prostrate themselves upon the city’s streets, forced by some cruel twist of fate or the actions of those whom had climbed above. They gathered on these avenues as plaque within veins, their continued accumulation a warning sign of the city’s impending cardiac arrest. Alongside them streamed endless waves of vehicles, emitting choking clouds of black filth that spiralled into the air. So constant were they, that day and night a smog hung above the city, a poison that hung as a sword above all. As the observer took in these things, the city itself seemed to morph before his very eyes, changing its form in accordance with its monstrous nature. Faces upon billboards became malevolent visages with gaping mouths stretched wide in hunger. The towers, once glittering, unfurled before him like the tendrils of some primordial behemoth. All rushed towards him, consuming him within an endless expanse of darkness which was dispelled a moment later. The observer stood once more upon the rooftop, and the city shimmered once more beneath him. But for he who had seen its true nature, it could never be home again.

FOURWARD return to EATBRAIN with the TORN PLACE EP, their second release following their breakout Wolfe EP on the imprint. The four tracks within feature their sound in full, with the titular TORN PLACE providing grounds for it alone whilst other tracks feature a who’s-who of fellow heavy hitters on the EATBRAIN lineup. TORN PLACE opens the EP with cinematic flair, in which otherwordly narration and frantic basses occupy space in equal measure. FOURWARD combine with eatbrain bossman JADE on MAKE SOME, a driving track that pushes forward on the constant report of its stabbing bassline. REDPILL brings his horror infused sound to the table with DIGEST, a collaboration that calls on the pairing’s jump up influences amongst sinister saws. ELBOW features the sounds of L 33 alongside the FOURWARD crew and rises upon booming percussion before launching into a peak section of mechanized highs and rumbling lows. With the TORN PLACE EP, FOURWARD launch their multifaceted sound further onwards and upwards.

Chris.Su- Without You EP [Fate Recordings]

CHRIS.SU makes a return to his own FATE RECORDINGS imprint with his WITHOUT YOU EP, a four track effort that sees him cover soaring melodics, hard edged sonics & deep rolling basslines with equal precision. As a 20 year veteran of the drum & bass scene CHRIS.SU is no stranger to such wide ranging sonic output, and such has been the focus of his FATE RECORDINGS imprint since its launch in 2013. The WITHOUT YOU EP marks CHRIS.SU’s first solo release since his Solar Eclipse EP released on 2016, and its clear that these tracks have been crafted with meticulous dedication to his diverse style.

WITHOUT YOU opens the EP alongside the lovelorn vocals of FEDORA which glide effortlessly over a driving beat, creating an experience of cathartic harmony as their sonant cries ring out at the track’s peak. TENSION carries with it a harsher attitude whilst still immersed in a sea of harmonic pads, the graceful undulations of which give way to the shifting movements of a fierce bassline that winds its way through the track’s sonic mileu. RAINDUST, the EP’s collaborative effort with NYMFO, tracks a course between the poles of the previous tracks. Herein, cascades of ephemeral vocals pervade the spaces between a deep rolling bassline as it moves through the track’s spacious sonic environment. The EP is then closed by the liquid mix of the titular WITHOUT YOU, amplifying the track’s emotive atmosphere atop the steady pulses of its refashioned bassline.

With the WITHOUT YOU EP, CHRIS.SU returns with a dynamic flourish of his musical ability, touching on multiple styles of drum and bass while crafting them to fit his signature sound. Subp Yao- Let Em Drown//Bubbles [Methlab]

SUBP YAO makes his debut on METHLAB RECORDINGS with the release of an aqueous pair of halftime tracks entitled LET ‘EM DROWN // BUBBLES. A rising name in the bass music scene, whose sets encompass a wide range of genres between 100-175 bpm, SUBP YAO has presented releases on an array of well-respected labels in the past year. These have included Saturate, Flexout Audio and Unchained Recordings, sick imprints through which he has displayed his stylistically signature warped beats. Now, SUBP YAO joins the forward-thinking musical minds at METHLAB RECORDINGS to further evolve this style, delivering twin audio sequences that expand new bounds from his founding principles.

LET ‘EM DROWN glides smoothly through its depths, carried forward by a constant flow present between bass, kick, and snare. Within its higher registers, high hats, bells, and sonorous pulses refract above the bassline, which lends a grounding influence. BUBBLES brings considerable bassweight, further amplified by the crushed and distorted kickdrum that breaks cyclically upon it, with each and every attack leaving harmonic echoes in its wake. Above these booming surges, the initially hesitant tone of an effervescent synthline is slowly transformed into a swirling sonic storm by the intensity of the beat below it, churning with energy swept from the echoes of the kick.

With LET ‘EM DROWN// BUBBLES, SUBP YAO presents a duo of powerful tracks that display his style with a heavy purity, its driving halftime basis merged with a menagerie of sonic textures in a unique synthesis of sound.
