Within the D&B community, Venison has already carved a reputable career within electronic music with releases on Exit, Renegade Hardware, Modern Urban Jazz, Nu Directions, Inperspective Records and more.
Now, under this new alias, Venison traverses across to slower tempos and from the offset his debut release on Heresy sees Venison sonically capture his trans genre love of House, Techno, Calypso and Jazz which here is all perfectly wrapped up in a cozy blanket of D&B Breakbeat sensibilities.
The E.P kicks off with “Pink Castle Park No2,” A pure 4/4 breakbeat workout carried by a hugely infectious and relentless groove which is geniously underpinned with subtle, (but huge bassline) underneath. This is definitely one for the speaker box crew.
Following on “Unobtainable” brings a techno infused mix of footwork to the floor with a perfect juxtaposition of musicality, ethereal sounds and rhythmic heartbeat. Its no wonder that “Unobtainable” has been getting noticed within well informed circles and clearly demonstrates Venison’s minimal prowess and versatility.
“Never 4 Me ” Beautifully shuffles its way around the Jazz piano sample centre point in perfect unison to a haunting vocal chant creating a style described best by Venisons own description of ‘Soca Techno’. A great individual outing for any dance floor guaranteed to get those feet moving.
Last up sees “Gangstress” (with Jagis). Sleazy, funk tinged tech house with a Latin feel. Here we find a steady balance of filtered samples fused with the smoothest of smooth bass and intricate percussion all finished off with an absolutely amazing vocal – The ideal finale to an E.P that confidently defies genre definition and tests musical boundaries.
